Bri began visiting the Healy Murphy Center (HMC) our Casa partner in San Antonio, Texas, over two years ago, when she was 15 years old. When she arrived to the program, she had just experienced the trauma of her mother’s murder and came from an unstable, food-insecure living arrangement. Needless to say, she was having a difficult time adjusting to a traditional learning environment.
At Healy-Murphy, Bri was connected to mental health counseling services and support. She received daily meals, and the center staff developed a custom-tailored academic curriculum for Bri to follow at her own pace. Bri also found great comfort when she began her nutrition education. As a child, Bri loved to cook with her grandmother. She began cooking again with HMC’s nutritionist.
Now, a high school junior, Bri cooks healthy meals regularly. On special occasions, she even prepares meals for her fellow students and takes great pride in creating her very own recipes. This Casa partner organization provides life changing educational opportunities that help nourish the bodies, hearts, and minds of countless students like Bri.
